USA TODAY Sports activities’ Bob Nightengale breaks down the MLB playoff races.

Through virtually any measure, rookie Chris Paddack has confirmed he can pitch within the main leagues. However the San Diego Padres on Wednesday optioned the gifted right-hander to the minors.

The demotion comes as a bit of of a surprise to Padres fanatics after Paddack posted a three.15 ERA with 72 strikeouts and 13 walks in his first 65⅔  innings as a big leaguer.

He is carried out neatly sufficient to be regarded as probably the most best applicants for Nationwide League Rookie of the 12 months honors. He even confirmed just a little big-league swagger previous this season when he welcomed a head-to-head matchup with rookie slugger Pete Alonso of the New York Mets.

“He’s a really perfect participant, indubitably. Does he deserve (the Rookie of the Month award)? Completely. However I’m coming for him,” Paddack mentioned prior to dealing with the Mets final month. “We’ll see Monday who the highest canine is. That’s one thing I’m having a look ahead to, needless to say.”

Paddack, 23, made San Diego’s roster out of spring training, despite only reaching the Class AA level last season.

The Padres say they’re sending him to Class A Lake Elsinore (Calif.) to get some extra rest. To some, that might be code for manipulating his major league service time, but he should only stay in the minors for a few weeks.

It isn’t unusual for groups to restrict the workload of younger pitchers, particularly those that have had main accidents up to now. Paddack tore his ulnar collateral ligament in 2016 and ignored all the 2017 season convalescing from Tommy John surgical operation.

Alternatively, he used to be good final season, posting a blended 2.10 ERA at Elegance A and AA with 120 strikeouts in 90 innings. That, coupled with a powerful spring coaching, gained him a place within the Padres’ opening day rotation.
